Frank Yu

By Jennifer Lee
Frank Yu traces his initial interest in cars to the first installment of the modern auto tuner film series, The Fast and the Furious. At the time, Frank owned a MK IV VW Jetta 2.0. The film inspired him to customize his ride, adding an AEM intake, GIAC chip, Konig Livewire rims and spoiler, Techtonics Tuning cat-back exhaust, cams, and adjustable cam gears and a body kit from Andy's Autosport. While Frank's first car was a Mazda Protege that he slapped some decent tires on and drove aggressively, it wasn't until he saw a video of Keichii Tsuchiya in his N/A Toyota Corolla beating a Nissan Skyline and turbo Corolla that really piqued his interest in racing. Frank felt the need for something faster and bought his first Nissan 240sx, a 1993 S13 fastback. What was an intended three-year project somehow came together in nine months, including an SR20DET swap with Volk Gramlight wheels, JIC coilovers, and a Bride racing seat to name some of the modifications. Frank has since sold that 240sx and has owned a Honda S2000, Subaru WRX, Acura Legend, a Civic, and he is now currently on his second SR20 powered 240. A car many have know as the Total Function reppin? mobile, but is currently on the market in favor of a new project. Frank is known to be selling something before he even owns it. Total Function was founded and has been solely operated by Frank since January of 2006. TF began as something to do for fun and to give locals and Traction Optional community members a close-to-home distributor to work with. TF offers aftermarket parts from brakes to turbo upgrades to aero kits. Frank admits to being one of the non-racers of TO. He prefers the business aspects and participating from the sidelines, from assisting with installations, doing, ride-alongs, giving technical advice or selling parts. Frank plans to further pursue his business aptitude by becoming a pharmacist. He figures by combining his interest in medicine with his fondness for 'slangin stuff' he'll be in his ideal element. Another S2000 is in Frank's sights and he hopes to eventually own a Porsche 911 or the R35 Skyline GT-R. So, a career in the pharmaceutical industry would well suit him. Frank claims that he will one day be on the track, but for now this businessman is just as content being in a drifter's passenger seat as driving.
